Name: Genbu
First Appearance: Chapter 1 (in reference only)
Genbu is one of the beast gods in the Universe of the Four Gods. He rules over the northen province of Hokkan and takes the form of a tortoise surrounded by snakes. In ancient astrology, he is known as the Black Tortoise of Winter. He can only be summoned by a priestess from another world, and once called, will grant three wishes.

Name: Takiko Okuda
First Appearance: Chapter 1
Takiko is the main protagonist of Genbu Kaiden. She's a seventeen-year-old living in Morioka, Japan with her ailing mother Yoshie. Armed with a naginata and a desperate desire to be needed, Takiko enters the Universe of the Four Gods and becomes the Priestess of Genbu.

Seishi Name: Uruki
Birth Name: Rimudo Roun
First Appearance: Chapter 1
Uruki is the first Genbu seishi Takiko meets. His character is located on his chest and means 'House of the Woman'. His power is over wind, which he can only call in the form of a woman. Uruki saves Takiko from the Mou when she first enters the Universe of the Four Gods and they meet a mysterious douji while stranded on a mountain covered in snow. Uruki travels with Soruen, a long-time friend and protector.

Seishi Name: Tomite
Birth Name: Chamuka Tan
First Appearance: Chapter 2
Tomite is the second Genbu seishi to be found. His character is on his left shoulder and means 'House of the Void'. His power is over ice, which he shoots from his fists. Tomite is originally a bounty hunter after Uruki. He captures Takiko in the hopes of luring Uruki out and it is his mother Boraate, and their clan, who discover she is the Priestess of Genbu.

Name: Boraate Tan
First Appearance: Chapter 3
Boraate is Tomite's mother and a member of the Ha tribe. She is the first to believe Takiko is the Priestess of Genbu and her support helps convince Takiko to journey and find the other seishi.

Name: Einosuke Okuda
First Appearance: Chapter 1
Einosuke is an established author who travels the world for material on Ancient China. Engrossed with work, he pays little attention to his wife or daughter. On his last trip, he brings home the Universe of the Four Gods and sets the legend in motion.

Name: Yoshie Okuda
First Appearance: Chapter 1
Yoshie is Takiko's mother and Einosuke's wife. She moved with her daughter from Tokyo back to her hometown of Morioka in the beginning of Genbu Kaiden. Yoshie suffers from a mysterious illness and lies waiting for her husband to return from his research in China.

Name: Tooyama
First Appearance: Chapter 1
Tooyama is Takiko's classmate. She and Takiko are sparring in gym class in the beginning of Genbu Kaiden. Tooyama and her friends criticize Takiko's use of force and try gossiping about her mother's disease. Tooyama reappears in Chapter 29, when Takiko leaves the Universe of the Four Gods and returns to school in the real world for a time.

Name: Darute
First Appearance: Chapter 4
Darute is a little girl who offers Takiko and Tomite shelter after they reveal their miko and seishi status by using powers to put out a fire. She's the first to offer them kindness outside Tomite's clan. Darute's grandfather makes a new naginata and bow for the pair.

Name: Shigi
First Appearance: Chapter 4
A Kutou assassin, Shigi is charged with killing the Genbu miko and seishi. He wears a constant cold smile and is ruthless in his hunt. A dark past marrs his actions, resulting in cruel, merciless decisions. Shigi works under General Haagasu and with Hien.

Name: Hien
First Appearance: Chapter 4
Hien is fiercely loyal to Prince Hakei, and serves the Kutou army. Unlike his superior, Shigi, Hien shows emotions and is prone to fits of swearing and rage. He is the last survivor of his village and fights as a man with nothing to lose.
